There’s a big bed with curtains you can close. There’s a funny old clock on the table, and on the captain’s desk there’s an old map. It shows the fastest way to sail from London to China. The guide shows the class a very old telescope. “It’s for finding land,” she says. “Without the captain’s telescope and the map, this ship can’t sail anywhere.” The class likes the captain’s cabin. There are old papers on his desk and his books are still in the cupboard. “Captain Moodie even had a cat,” the guide says. “A cat on a ship?What for?” asks Paul. “To catch mice, silly,” says Lucy. “That’s right,” says the guide. “Mice and rats. They eat everything on board, even the tea.” “What colour was Captain Moodie’s cat?” Lucy asks. The guide tells them that it was a black cat and it only had one ear. “Only one ear? Poor thing! How did that happen?” the class wants to know. “No one knows,” the guide says. “Maybe it was in a fight.” “Wow! What was the cat’s name?” Lucy asks. “Hmm. Good question”, the guide says, “I’m sorry – I really don’t know. But I can find out and tell you later. Now let’s go downstairs to the ship’s hold. That’s where they stored the tea. I’m sorry we can’t sail on the Cutty Sark, but we can watch a video about sailing down the river to the North Sea and then to China!” The class all leave the captain’s cabin. But Paul and Jason are looking at the old map of the way to China and the cool telescope. “Come on, you guys,” Lucy tells them. “Don’t you want to see the video?” “We’re coming,” they say, but the boys stay in the captain’s cabin. It’s fun to look at the captain’s things and think what it was like to go to sea. Just then a cat comes out from behind the curtain on the captain’s bed. “Hey, look, Paul, a cat!” says Jason. “How did a cat get in here?” But Paul is not listening.
