124 one hundred and twenty - four Storyteller 1: Dear friends, please come and see our play. The place is London, not today. But 1380, let us say. It tells of Dick and of his cat. He gets a lot of gold for that, and soon he wears the Lord Mayor’s hat. Scene One Storyteller 2: We are in the country near London. A man with a horse stops near a small, old house. Sissy Forge: Good morning, good morning. What can I do for you? Buckingham: Can you tell me the way to London, please? Sissy: Yes, I can. But it isn’t easy to find. My friend, Dick, can show you the way. Dick! Dick! Dick: I’m coming! What’s wrong, Sissy? Can I help you? Sissy: Dick, can you show this man the road to London? He doesn’t know the way. Dick: Yes, of course. Come with me, please. (they walk together) Dick: They say there’s gold in the streets of London and all of the houses are big and new, there – is that true? Buckingham: Well, there are some big, new houses, but there is no gold in the streets – just a lot of rubbish. But London is beautiful. Dick: Here we are, now. Go over the river, and the road to London is behind those trees. Buckingham: Thank you, Dick! (throws him a piece of gold) That’s for your help. Dick: Wow! A piece of gold! Thank you! Bye! (whistling) Barny Forge: Hey, Dick! What are you doing?Why aren’t you working?Why aren’t you feeding the pigs and the sheep? You sleep in my kitchen, eat my food, and then you don’t work? I don’t want you here. Go and pack your things and leave! Dick: But, but – where can I go, Mr Forge? I haven’t got a mother or a father now. Barny: That’s not my problem, Dick – that’s your problem! Dick: Oh no! What can I do?
