In Britain there are lots of special days. You know some of them, like Christmas and Easter, in Austria, too. But people do different things on these days in Britain. Other days, like Guy Fawkes Day, are not special days in Austria. Some days, like Red Nose Day, are new, and others, like Valentine’s Day, are very old. Here you can read and learn about some special days in Britain. HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY! Think of M, Think of E. Put them together And think of ME! A calendar Around the year Guy Fawkes Day – November 5th November, 1605: Guy Fawkes and some friends try to blow up Parliament and kill King James I, but the King’s men find them. Three months later, Parliament and the King are OK, and Guy Fawkes and his friends are dead. Today, children make ‘guys’ and carry them through the streets. On 5th November they put the ‘guys’ on fires. There are a lot of fireworks. Red Nose Day – March On this day lots of people in Britain wear a red nose and do something funny for charity. Many schools in Britain organize events for Red Nose Day. The pupils do funny things – they sing, dance or tell jokes – and ask for money for charity. Famous people collect money, too. They want to make people laugh and to help poor or ill people in Britain and in other countries, too. Red Nose Day is a British idea, but you can find it in other countries, even in Austria. Valentine’s Day – February On 14th February, Valentine’s Day, in Britain you write a card to a girl or boy that you love. You often write a poem in the card, but you do not write your name. The person must guess who the card is from. Sometimes people give flowers or other presents, too. 1 From February to November Read the texts.
