20 twenty C Hey, where’s my bike? A One morning Lisa rode into the school playground and saw Sam and Rob with a football. “Hey, you guys!” she called. “Wait for me!” She left her bike in the bike shed and ran over to the boys. B There was assembly later that morning. Lisa sat in the assembly hall with her tutor group. The headteacher had an important announcement for the school. “We must all be very careful with our things. There are thieves at our school.” Everyone in the assembly hall was worried. “We think the thieves come from outside Thomas Tallis,” said the headteacher. “So put your mobiles and money in your lockers, and when you ride your bike to school … .” “Oh! My new bike!” said Lisa. “Don’t worry,” said Emma. “You always lock it in the bike shed.” “That’s the problem,” answered Lisa. “I think I forgot.” D A week later Sam and Rob were on the way to school together. In Hill Road Rob suddenly stopped and pointed. “Look,” he said. There was a dirty white van outside a house with a garage. The van’s back doors were open, but it was dark inside so the boys could not see anything. A man was in the driver’s seat and another man was in the garage. “Hurry up, Alf!” said the man in the van to the man in the garage. “Is that last one ready?” The second man came out of the garage with a bike. It was blue and it had a basket and a brown saddle. “Good,” said the man in the van. “Quick, put it in the van. Let’s get out of here.” C Assembly ended and Lisa ran outside. Emma and Rob followed her. They found her by the bike shed with her mouth open. “It’s not here!” cried Lisa. “Did you leave it here?” asked Rob. “Right here!” answered Lisa. “Oh, why didn’t I lock it?” Lisa told the headteacher about her bike and he phoned the police. Emma and Rob went back to class, and Lisa waited for the police. When the police arrived, they asked her a lot of questions. “These thieves are very clever,” said the policewoman. “They steal bikes in Greenwich and then they sell them in another city. They often change parts of the bikes so you cannot recognize them.” 25 5 10 15 20 30 35 40 1 Check-in Language Story Wordwise Check-out Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlag öbv
