80 e i ghty C On an oil platform Rob wants to know about Uncle Bruce’s job as a weatherman on an oil platform. Uncle Bruce: It’s a hard job, Rob, but if I don’t do it, no one will! I work on three oil platforms in the North Sea. I fly between them by helicopter. Rob: Wow! That’s cool! I’d like to go in a helicopter. Uncle Bruce: Well, if you’re lucky, one day you will. Rob: So, what do you do on the oil platforms? Uncle Bruce: I’m responsible for the computer equipment in the weather stations and I write the weather reports. Rob: But if you’re on one oil platform, you won’t know what’s happening on the other two. If the computers on the other platforms break down, how will you know? Uncle Bruce: Don’t worry! If a computer breaks down, it will tell me! Rob: Huh! How? Uncle Bruce: Well, if there’s a problem with a computer, it will send me a message on my mobile. And I can be there and fix the problem in about 1 or 2 hours. Rob: Yes, but why is the weather so important? Uncle Bruce: Well, if a storm comes, the workers won’t be out on the platforms – it’s just too dangerous. And it’s my job to tell them before the storm comes. They need time to check all the equipment. If it’s a very bad storm, they’ll even stop drilling. Rob: That’s a cool job. I’d like a job like that. Hey, but if you’re so good at computers, what about your computer? Let’s try and fix it! Look, if I turn it on, we’ll see what’s wrong. Uncle Bruce: OK, OK, you win! Hmm, if I look at this, I’ll see the problem… no, that won’t work. I tried that last time and it didn’t work then. Or the time before that … hmmm… . Rob: What about this? If you put this here, that will fit there, and then … yes! Brilliant! It’s working! Uncle Bruce: Rob, you did it! Fantastic! So, if one of the computers breaks down tomorrow, will you fly out with me?! Rob: Yeah! You just try and stop me! 1 Match the parts Which part of the sentence fits? Write the sentences. 1.
