His biggest enemy was King Edward of England. During this dangerous time, King Robert the Bruce of Scotland wanted one thing more than anything else. He wanted his country to be free. But he had one problem: his biggest enemy wanted Scotland to be a part of England. King Edward had a huge army in Scotland and Robert the Bruce could not get the English out with his small army. The two armies fought against each other again and again. They fought battles in Edinburgh and Glasgow, in Dumfries and Dundee and Ayrshire. The Scottish army lost every time. The sixth battle was at Stirling Castle. Here the Scottish lost so many men that the army had to flee. They fled to the Scottish Highlands. There were dark forests where the king and his men could hide. Soon they found a big cave where all the men could sleep inside. “We will probably be OK here,” thought the Scottish king. “Edward’s men won’t find us.” B Robert’s men were tired. Some of them were ill or hurt. They needed time to get better after the many battles. Robert was worried. How could they ever win? Robert didn’t have a new plan and he wanted to give up. His army was so small already and the English had so many men. “I should send the men home,” Robert decided. “Their families need them. We can’t win.” It was a long time before Robert fell asleep that first night in the cave. In the light of the fire he watched a spider in the cave above him. The spider made a web. Sometimes the web broke. But the spider started again and again until it finished the web. Robert watched the spider and his eyes slowly closed, but he didn’t sleep well. C He was the first to wake up the next morning. The first thing he saw when he opened his eyes was the spider’s web. It was beautiful. That day the men hunted some animals in the woods, found a river with fresh water and got more wood for their fire. The good food made the men feel better, but nobody talked about the English. They were too worried. 6 Check-in Language Story Wordwise Check-out Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
