A Christof and Hannah told their dad all about Tim and Kimberly. “And Tim told us about Fritz Schmitz,” Christof said. “Fritz who?” Mr Lehmann asked. They told their father the ghost story. “… he lived in this house until he died. He was angry with everyone,” Christof finished. “Tim says his ghost is still here,” Hannah said. “Good story,” Mr Lehmann said. “Let’s get ready for tea. Your mum will be down soon.” “Erik!” Mrs Lehmann called. “See, there she is. What is it, Wendy?” Mrs Lehmann looked scared. “I think there are mice in the attic. I heard something running.” The children and their father looked at each other. They were all thinking the same thing: mice or a German ghost? “It’s nothing, Wendy. Christof and I will look after tea,” Mr Lehmann said. “No, I won’t!” Christof shouted. His mother looked at him strangely. “I mean, no I won’t go after tea. I’ll go with you now.” They got some cheese and mousetraps from the kitchen and went to the attic. “Why is Christof acting so strangely?” Mrs Lehmann asked. Hannah told her mother the ghost story. “That’s silly. It’s just mice!” Mrs Lehmann laughed. B The next afternoon Mr Lehmann checked the mousetraps. All the cheese was gone. After tea it was raining so Hannah and Christof went to their bedroom to read. Suddenly they heard noises above. “Are those the mice that Mum heard?” Hannah asked. “They must be awfully big mice.” “Come on,” Christof said. “Let’s go get some more cheese for the mousetraps.” The children went up to the attic. When they opened the door, they saw lots of boxes and the mousetraps. “Let’s go this way,” Christof said. The children walked into the attic. “Hey, look at this!” Hannah pointed to a book. “It’s a German school book.” “‘Guten Tag. Ich heiße … .’“ Christof read. “How did that get here?” he wondered. “Ha ha ha!” The children heard a voice and hid behind some boxes. “Ihr werdet nie … .” They couldn’t understand the rest. “Christof! That was German! It’s Fritz Schmitz!” Hannah shouted. “Ich kriege euch … .” Christof and Hannah ran down the stairs and out of the house. 7 Check-in Language Story Wordwise Check-out Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
