ninety-seven 97 “We’ve got to find Mum and Dad!” Hannah shouted. Outside they ran into Kimberly. They told her about everything in the attic. “Fritz Schmitz?” she asked. “I think I know who your Fritz is,” she laughed. She told them about the German Club play at school last year. “Guess who played the ghost? Tim’s playing a joke on you.” “But how did he get into our attic?” Christof asked. “Come with me,” said Kimberly. “I’ll show you something.” The Lehmanns and Kimberly’s family lived in terraced houses that shared a wall. They went to Kimberly’s attic and she showed them how the two houses were connected. There was a door between the attics, but it was hidden in a corner. “So that’s how the ghost got in,” Hannah said. “You mean Tim. I think it’s time for an English ghost to visit Tim,” said Christof. C The next day … “Shh! I think he’s going up to the attic.” “And he thinks we’re in our bedrooms.” “Yeah, just like yesterday.” “Shh! Let’s go up now.” “Listen! He’s talking.” “Ich kriege euch… lasst mir, uh, mich in Ruhe. Ich bleibe hier.” The three children tried not to laugh. Now it was Hannah’s turn. “I’ve come back, Fritz Schmitz. I’ve come back from the sea,” Hannah said in a very ghostly voice. D “What was that? Kimberly?” Tim shouted from the Lehmann’s attic. “Fritz Schmitz! I’m here to get you!” The three children held the door and Tim pounded on it. “Help, help! Let me out! Kimberly!” Finally they opened the door and let Tim into his own attic. “Tim, what’s wrong? What were you doing in there?” Kimberly asked. “The door was locked. There were voices. I … I … think there’s a ghost up here! Why are you laughing? Hey, Christof, Hannah. What are you doing here?” “We came to say hello to Fritz. What are you doing here?” “To Fritz …what do you … ?” Kimberly, Christof and Hannah started laughing again. “Now we’ve tricked you, Tim.” 45 50 55 60 65 70 75 2 A note You are Hannah or Christof.
