Red Line 4, Coursebook
A calendar Special days in the US 110 one hundred and ten July 4th, or Independence Day , is a holiday, so nobody goes to work. The American flag is everywhere, and people put on red, white and blue clothes (the colors of the flag) and paint their faces in these colors, too. There are lots of parades, parties and fireworks. Most American families put a pumpkin in their window for Halloween (October 31st). In Ireland and other Celtic coun- tries, this was the night when people tried to frighten bad spirits away. Now young kids put on scary costumes, ring on their neighbors’ doorbells and say ‘trick or treat’. For older kids it’s also a chance to put on a costume and to have a good time at a party! “I have a dream …” is a phrase from one of the most famous speeches in American history. Martin Luther King said it when he was fighting to get the same rights for black and white Americans in the 1960s. King was murdered in 1968, but every year on Martin Luther King Day (the third Monday in January), there is a holiday so that Americans remember this great leader. Labor Day is a holiday at the end of the summer in the US. It is always on the first Monday in September. This is the day when America remembers its workers. It’s a great day for a hike in the country, or for a barbecue in the backyard with grilled fish or sausages!
