one hundred and eleven 111 The early English settlers in America were glad when Native Americans helped them to grow food in 1621, their first year in New England. So they had their first Thanksgiving meal to say ‘thank you’. Today Americans still get together on this holiday. It is always the last Thursday in November, and many people travel from one end of the country to the other to be with their family. They eat turkey with stuffing and cranberry sauce, and the dessert is a delicious pumpkin pie. On St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th) everything in the US is green! St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, but the day isn’t only for Americans whose families came from that country. Lots of people dye their hair green, wear green clothes, and in Chicago they even dye the river green for the day! Memorial Day is the last Monday in May. It’s the holiday when Americans remember the soldiers who died for their country in war. President’s Day is a holiday on the third Monday in February in most states. On this day Americans remember all their presidents. One of the most famous presidents was John F. Kennedy, who will always be special for the people of Berlin. In 1963 he visited the city and said, “Ich bin ein Berliner!”, to show that he understood their problems. E F G H 5 6 7 8 2 Dates a) Which holiday is it? 1. It’s at the end of May. 2.
