Christopher Columbus Most people agree that the first settlers came to the American continent from what is now Russia in about 40,000 B. C. They were the first Americans. In 1492 Christopher Columbus sailed across the Atlantic from Spain and landed on an island near America. He called the people he found there ‘Indians’, because he thought that he was in India. 40,000 BC 1400 1500 1600 1700 In 1620 the ship Mayflower brought 102 people from England to America. These ‘pilgrims’ started a colony where they could practice their religion in freedom. Today Americans celebrate the pilgrims’ first harvest as ‘Thanksgiving’ every November. By the 1770s the people in the colonies were unhappy about how Britain treated them, and about the taxes that they had to pay to the ‘mother country’ across the Atlantic. So they signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4th 1776 and became a new country, the United States of America. After that George Washington’s American army fought the War of Independence against the British and won. Washington later became the first president of the US.
