Slaves in one of the states of the South During the nineteenth century the North and the South of the US drifted apart. Farmers in the South used slaves that had been brought from Africa. In the North there was more heavy industry, and people thought that slavery was wrong. From 1861 –1865 there was a terrible war between the two groups of states. When the states of the North won the war they freed the slaves. 1800 1850 1900 1950 2000 today After the end of slavery there was still discrimination against black Americans. Martin Luther King and others fought – without violence – so that black people could have the same rights as white people. It all started in 1955 , when a bus driver told a black woman, Rosa Parks, to give her seat to a white man and she said no. In the 1960s there were new laws to end discrimination like this. On September 11th 2001 terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and more than 2,800 people died. Many Americans realized that they were less safe than they had thought, even in the US.
