1. Before the Europeans arrived, in 1492, all of what is now the US belonged to the Native Americans. There were lots of different tribes in the country. 3. But the Native Americans couldn’t stop the settlers and they had to move farther West. Many of them died on the way. 5. When work on a railroad from East toWest started, More land was taken from the Native Americans. They called the train the ‘Iron Horse’. The railroad was finished in 1869. 2. In the middle of the 19th century European settlers took land from the Native Americans, who they called ‘Indians’. The Native Americans fought back and there were wars. 4. Many white settlers were farmers with huge farms. The men who helped them were called ‘cowboys’. 6. Thousands of people went West when gold was found there in 1848. Some of them were outlaws. They robbed banks and trains.
