thir ty-nine 39 C Before the dance 1 The Fall Dance Before you read, think: what do you already know about the Fall Dance at Berry Middle School? Steve had been late to Math class three times this semester, so he didn’t see the posters until he came out of detention. It was one of Student Council’s most important charity events of the year, the one no one wanted to miss: the Fall Dance in November. Dating was very important at Berry Middle School. The girls always asked the boys to the Fall Dance. Steve liked dancing, but he didn’t think his chances were very good; he hadn’t had a date in 7th grade, and the new school dress code didn’t help. What girl went crazy about khaki pants? It was Monday, 5th period. This month, Student Council was selling ‘Berry Bear’ pencils for poor families in Mesquite. You could send them to your friends, with a note. They were delivering today. But Steve hadn’t sent any pencils. Boys only did that if they had a girlfriend, so he was surprised when he heard his name. “Hey, the orchestra geek got a pencil,” Cody, the school bully, shouted. Steve didn’t answer. He put the pencil into his backpack. He didn’t have time to look at it. While Steve was walking to the Music room for his 6th-period class, Brittany Kolden saw him and asked, “Did you get the pencil?” “Huh?” Steve said. “Oh, yeah. The pencil.” The bell rang and they had to run. The pencil was from Brittany? Cool. Back at his locker after 6th period, Steve looked into his backpack. The pencil was at the bottom, under the sandwich he hadn’t eaten for lunch. The mayonnaise had left stains on the note, so he couldn’t read everything, only ‘dance’, ‘with me’, ‘Love,’ and the letters ‘ny’ at the end. He smiled as he took out his jacket. Suddenly his friend Joshua was there. “What are you smiling about?” Joshua asked. “Um… Brittany asked me to the dance.” “Brittany Smith, the principal’s daughter?” “No, Brittany Kolden, the cheerleader.” “What?! She looked great at the game Saturday,” said Joshua. “Hey, can she get me a date with her friend Tiffany?” he added. In front of the school, Brittany was getting onto the school bus. “Brittany!” Steve shouted. “I’ll go!” “So cool!” she answered. “Bye!” Steve Brittany Tiffany Joshua 30 35 40 45 50 5 10 15 20 25 Text 2 Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
