sixty-five 65 2 Compounds The word ‘screenplay’ is a compound. It’s a play, with dialogue and action, for the screen, or cinema. Put the parts together to make new words to fit the definitions. Check in your dictionary if you aren’t sure. wind • ball • mini • youth • clock • board • mail • field hostel • box • walk • bus • work • sock • radio • park 1. You can walk along it at the beach. That’s a boardwalk. 2. You find letters or e-mails here. 3. a small bus 4. experiments and research outside for Biology 5. a cheap place to stay for young people 6. a stadium for baseball and other games 7. It shows pilots how windy it is. 8. an alarm clock that wakes you up with music 3 Spelling mistakes Make a checklist to help your spelling. Here are some ideas. 1. You often don’t hear the letters ‘gh’. But don’t forget they are there when you write! ➝ fi gh t, bou gh t, wei gh t 2. Never put a ‘k’ in front of a ‘t’! ➝ action, October 3. Many words are similar in English and German, but not quite the same. ➝ simp le – simpel, tit le – Titel ➝ ph one – Telefon, ph oto – Foto 4. Remember that there are often double letters in -ing and past forms. ➝ stop – sto pp ed, sto pp ing ➝ plan – pla nn ed, pla nn ing 5. The letter ‘y’ often changes to ‘ie’. ➝ carry – she carr ie s, they carr ie d ➝ party – two part ie s ➝ happy – happ ie r 6.
