I am one of the oldest members of the Hualapai tribe and I am worried. I see the Skywalk as a big problem: Our land is for everyone, for us, for our ancestors, for our children and our children’s children. We get all our food from our land, and water from its rivers and lakes. So we must look after it. The Skywalk will bring too many tourists to our land. These people are not interested in the Hualapai and their culture. They just want to look down into the Grand Canyon. They will take our rocks as souvenirs and damage the land. They will leave all their garbage and they will use our water. We already do not have enough water – they will come and use it all for their toilets and showers! Some land is very sacred to the Hualapai people. This means we must not build anything on it. Now our tribal council has let others do this on sacred Hualapai land! The Skywalk is like a huge, hungry monster which shows no respect for our ancestors. The people who built it are only interested in money and do not care about our ancient traditions. It could stop people on their way to better lands after they die. I am sure that one day the people from our tribe who said ‘yes’ to this monster will be sorry. But by then it will be too late!
