The ISS travels around the Earth 15 times a day, at more than 17,000 miles an hour. But what is life in space really like? WEIGHTLESSNESS In space things have no weight. Astronauts – and all the other things on the space station – float. This makes eating, drinking, sleeping and going to the bathroom very difficult. Astronauts must be able to live and work in ‘zero gravity’. So scientists give them training and advice before they leave. LONELINESS Astronauts have lived on the ISS since 2000. They usually spend four months in space before they can go home, and life there can be very lonely. But they can send messages to their friends and families regularly and tell them their news. SPACE TOURISTS There have already been tourists in space. NASA promises them an unforgettable adventure. But the journey into space is dangerous and it isn’t cheap (25 million dollars a trip)! Maybe one day NASA will offer tourists less expensive vacations in space. THE EARTH IN SPACE In the 1960s, the first astronauts took pictures which showed us the Earth from space. Before that, nobody knew what the Earth looked like. 1 Space and the ISS a) Do you think you could live and work in space? Would you like to be a space tourist? b) Collect facts about the ISS from the text. Make a list with these headings: 1. How fast? 2. How high above Earth? 3. Astronauts’ trips – how long? 4. Trips – how much money? 5. How many countries? 6. Problems? c) Find information about the ISS on the Internet. How many people are there now and what countries are they from? 2 Looking at English Read the sentences in the grammar box. Find more sentences like these in the text.
