GRAMMAR C ➝ G16 Imagine you and your family are on your way home after your vacation. It’s getting dark. Your mom sends a text message to your apartment in the city. The lights are switched on and off a few times so that any burglars are frightened away. Then the refrigerator is checked. There are no eggs for breakfast tomorrow, so you must stop at the supermarket on the way home. Pictures of all the rooms are sent by cameras to your cell phone. Everything looks OK. But there’s water under the bathroom sink. Is it leaking? Or did you leave the plug in and forget to turn off the faucet? Just as your parents start to worry, the faucet is turned off and the floor is dried. An apartment like this is called a ‘smart’ or intelligent home. All the work is done by computers. But sometimes there are problems. Imagine another day, and another journey home. Your mom sends a message to the apartment, but this time the lights aren’t switched on and off, so the burglars aren’t frightened away. You can’t see the burglars because the cameras aren’t working. The water isn’t turned off and when you get home everything is wet. Burglars have stolen all your electrical devices, even your microwave and your hairdryer! And the refrigerator is empty. You see, smart homes are only smart if they have electricity. If this is cut off, even the most intelligent homes have problems.
