74 seventy - four Meet halfway 1 Before you listen Some conversations become fights while others stay friendly. a) Look at these tips. Make a list of the tips which would help a conversation to stay friendly. Get mad. • Ask what the other person thinks. • Shout. • Show that you understand what the other person feels. • Always agree with the other person. • Cry – then the other person will be nice to you. • Explain your feelings or ideas. • Stay cool. • Show you are listening. • Tell the other person, “I knew you would say that!” • Be polite. • Look at your watch if you think the other person is saying something boring. • Always let the other person finish what he/she is saying. b) Compare your list with a partner. Are your lists the same? 2 Listening: Conversations a) You are going to hear conversations between two girls and their parents. Listen and take notes about: 1. what the girls want 2. which conversation goes well, and why 3. which conversation goes badly, and why b) How many of the useful phrases did you hear in the conversation that went well? 3 Role play: Meet halfway a) Look at the situation. Act out a role play with your partner. Can you meet halfway? Situation: Your class has some money after a school event. Now you want to spend it. Partner A wants to give the money to a very poor family in your town; Partner B wants to spend it on a class party or a class trip to the movies. b) Make up your own situation and act out another role play where you meet halfway. These phrases can help if the conversation doesn’t go well: I didn’t mean it like that. Are you sure about that? Maybe we ought to talk again later. Don’t get mad, please!
