82 e i ghty - two Skills workshop 4 Writing a factual text Factual texts Factual texts give information and statistics. You should not give your opinion when you write a factual text, or say what your feelings are about the subject. Reports, encyclopedia entries and summaries of stories are all examples of factual texts. It’s a good idea to write a factual text in three parts: 1. a short introduction (to catch the reader’s interest) 2. the ‘main part’ (a few paragraphs with your main points / information) 3. an ending with one or two sentences that give a summary of what you have written. • Remember to connect your sentences. Use words like ‘but’, ‘and’, ‘although’, ‘so that’, ‘because’, … (conjunctions). • Don’t repeat a word in the same or the next sentence. For example, for ‘students’, you can use ‘they’, or ‘the class’. WRI T ING SKI LLS 1 Beginnings a) Look at these beginnings of different texts. Which of them are from factual and which are from personal texts? Decide with a partner. b) Find out what kind of text it is for each one. 2 Connecting sentences Use the conjunction to make a longer sentence out of two short ones. Example: Ellis Island is famous. It’s where lots of immigrants landed. (because) Ellis Island is famous because it’s where lots of immigrants landed. 1. Free climbing is a popular sport. It can be dangerous. (but) 2. Lots of old people need a pacemaker. They have problems with their hearts. (because) 3. Middle schools have lots of rules. Many have a dress code. (and) 4. Parents often get mad. Kids play their music too loud. (when) 5. Some people listen to MP3 players on flights. They don’t have to talk to the person next to them. (so that) 6. The weather wasn’t too bad today.
