What is the poem about? • Is it in regular verses or free verse? Does it rhyme? Is there any alliteration, or other sound effect? • What do the similes and metaphors make you imagine? What senses do they use? • Think about what the poet’s message is. Why did the poet choose to write it like this? • What is the mood of the poem? (e.g. bitter, happy, sad, longing, light-hearted, resentful …) • What is your personal response to the poem, and why do you feel that way? • c) Now read the following review of the poem. Do you agree with the writer? d) One important thing that is missing from this review is quotations from the poem. Where would you put the following quotations from the poem into the review? This poem is called “Poetics” and is by Benjamin Zephaniah. It is about the joy of writing poetry. The poet obviously takes great pleasure in writing poems and wants to share that joy with the reader. Because of the simple rhythmical language, I feel that the poem may be aimed at children, encouraging them to look at the world around them and then go and write their own poems: “............” The poem has quite a traditional structure. It is organised into 6 verses. Each verse has 8 lines, except for the last one, which has an extra two lines. The poem has a regular ABAB rhyming pattern and has a strong, fast rhythm: “............” I think the poet wrote it like a traditional poem so that the structure of the poem would reflect his topic – poetry. The mood of the poem is happy and light-hearted. The poet uses some clever images and is very humorous in places: “............” I like the poem because it is positive and upbeat and fun. The poet clearly believes that everyone is creative and that we are all capable of writing poems if we just allow ourselves to: “............” Quote A “There are poems in me tea There are poems in me toast I have found much poetry In the place I love the most.” Quote B “There’s a poem in you beautiful Can’t you see it It’s right .............. there.” Quote D “Other poems make you grin When they dribble off your chin Some poems think they are great So they like to make you ................ wait.” Quote C “There are poems on your fingers There’s a poem on your nose” 125 6 Extensive unit 6: Poetry alive Nur zu Prüfzweck n – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
