Becoming familiar with … Listening You are going to listen to an expert talking about astrology. First you will have 45 seconds to study the task below, then you will hear the recording twice. While listening, match the phenomena (1–4) with the definitions (A–F). There are two extra definitions that you should not use. Write your answers in the spaces provided. After the second listening, you will have 45 seconds to check your answers. 30 03 A making statements that can easily be reversed B giving people news that pleases them rather than telling them anything unpleasant C people find it easier to recall information which means something to them D playing with people’s fascination with the unexplainable E giving non-specific information that can be applied to everyone F watching people closely and basing your questions on their reactions Astrology Definition 1 the Clever Hans effect 2 the “feel good” factor 3 the Barum effect 4 selective memory TIP Multiple matching tasks A Multiple matching task involves linking text elements to statements, definitions, (sub-)titles, a list of persons, pictures, etc. In the listening text at hand an expert describes four psychological mechanisms (the Clever Hans effect, the “feel good” factor, the Barum effect, and selective memory). While listening to the expert you have to match his descriptions with the definitions listed on the test sheet. To render the task more challenging there are two definitions that DO NOT apply to any psychological mechanism men- tioned in the text. Multiple matching tasks are used to assess your understanding of associations, relationships, definitions, etc. They often test our ability to summarise paragraphs in a text or to understand its main points. Proceed as follows: Read and listen to the instructions very carefully as they will tell you what exactly you are required to do. • They will also tell you the exact number of extra choices (i.e. the number of items you “should not use/ will not need”). Use the 45-second preparation time to carefully read the definitions, underlining some keywords in • each of them. Do not expect, however, to hear the definitions in the recording exactly as they are written on the question sheet. Rather brainstorm about words and expressions that could relate to and paraphrase those key words. Remember that each of the choices may be used only ONCE. In other words: there is only ONE • possible solution for each matching. Don’t be afraid, however, to pre-select more than one definition as you listen for the first time . Decide between these definitions when you listen again . 62 Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigen um des Verlags öbv
