0 Bollywood is the nickname given to the Indian film industry – it’s a play on the word Hollywood. The B comes from Bombay (now called Mumbai), India’s biggest city, where most of the films are shot. Bollywood is massive. It makes up to 800 films a year – twice as many as Hollywood – and about 14 million Indian people go to the cinema every day. (And, believe it or not, a lot of Bollywood films are shot in Austria! It is the scenic landscape of Tyrol that attracts the Indian film industry and with it thousands of Indian tourists every year. With “Kesariya Balam” by Sandeep Kumar, Austria now even has its first own crossover film Bollywood style. ) 1 In 1899 the first Indian film was screened, and Bollywood was born. In the 1950s, many Indians came to live and work in Britain and they brought their culture with them. Now, Bollywood’s biggest audience outside India is in Britain where many of the films are shown with English subtitles. 2 Bollywood films are really colourful with lots of singing and dancing. They also like to use the same plot: boy meets girl, they fall in love and struggle for family approval. There’s always a happy ending. There’s also always a hero, a heroine, a villain and a comedy sidekick. 3 Bollywood’s biggest problem is piracy – when people copy the films and either sell them or show them to other people for free. At present, Bollywood film producers are trying to find a way to stop this happening. Another problem is that younger generations sometimes find the stories a bit predictable. Directors are trying to solve this by choosing screenplays that reflect real life. Finally, Indian film makers find it difficult to compete with Hollywood’s blockbusters and their special effects.
