Read this review of the Bollywood blockbuster “Lagaan”. Did the critic like it? 15 BOLLYWOOD BLOCKBUSTER The Indian film industry is one of the biggest in the world, but for years it has not really reached large audiences outside of the subcontinent. “Lagaan” might just be the film to change all that. The story is set in India in the 19th century. The rains are late and the farmers of Champaner are facing a failed harvest. To make matters worse, their British rulers want to triple the year’s lagaan or tax. One of the villagers, Bhuvan (Aamir Khan), accepts a chal- lenge to play a game of cricket against the British. If his team win, the tax will be cancelled, if they lose, the entire village could face starvation. “Lagaan” is one of the most expensive films ever to come out of India, but it’s worth every rupee. It takes everything good about Bollywood and, helped considerably by a mainly English soundtrack, brings it to an interna- tional market. It is an enormously entertaining tale of how true leader- ship can overcome all prejudices, and leaves the audience feeling good about the world. It’s funny, it’s moving, it’s romantic and the musical numbers are fantastic. Those who love India, will have to own a copy, those who don’t, will after they’ve seen “Lagaan”. the rains are late: die Regenzeit verspätet sich to make matters worse: zu allem Übel 1 Match the paragraphs with the descriptions. 2 The introduction should be short but interesting and relevant.
