First study the table below. Then listen to the interviews with Hakika Singh and Dharamjit Mamdani and fill in the correct information. Don’t use more than four words for each entry. What do Mr Singh and Mr Mamdani have in common? • What differences do you notice? • 18 Thousands of immigrants from countries which used to be British colonies started coming into Britain in the 1950s. Most came from the West Indies, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh and wanted to find work, which was hard to find in their own countries. They were allowed in because they were needed to do work that Britons no longer wanted to do. According to the last census in 2001, ethnic minorities accounted for 7.9% of the UK’s population. There were 1,053,000 people of Indian origin, 747,000 people of Pakistani origin and 283,000 people of Bangladeshi origin living in Britain. Almost half of these were actually born in the UK.
