Jess said that it was all changing now. 1 When the reporting verb is in the present ( says, explains, etc.), the tense the verb has in direct speech does not change . But sometimes pronouns and adverbs change in reported speech. e.g. I  he, our  their, here  there, etc. 2 When the reporting verb is in the past ( said, explained, etc.), the tense the verb has in direct speech usually changes .
