One of Hollywood’s biggest tourist attractions has to be the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Each year, thousands of visitors walk down Hollywood Boulevard, from Gower St. to La Brea Ave, and down Vine St. from Yucca St. to Sunset Boulevard, searching the sidewalk for the pink and charcoal squares of their favourite celebrities from the world of entertainment. The first star was placed by actress Joanne Wood- ward on 9 February 1960, and in the following 16 months, over 1550 stars were laid. These days, however, an own star on the Walk of Fame is an honour as big as any Oscar, Emmy or Grammy. On average, only one or two new stars are added each month, and one posthumous star per year. Each star contains the name of the artist and one of five standard symbols to show which area of the arts the person is being recognised for. There is a film camera for movie stars and directors, a TV for those in the television industry, a record for singers, a microphone for those in the radio industry, and the twin masks of comedy and tragedy for those in the theatre business. It is possible to have more than one star, as is the case with Gene Autry – the singing cowboy. e Hollywood Walk of Fame He has five – one for each category. Even animals can get a star: two dogs have been recognised so far – Rin Tin Tin and Lassie. To get your own star, you first need to have your name nominated. This can be done by anyone, from a fan to your agent, but the application must be accompanied by a letter expressing your own approval. All applications are then consid- ered by a committee consisting of one expert from each of the five areas of the entertainment business and each June, an average of 20 names are chosen from the 200 applications that are received each year. If the application is accepted, you then have up to five years to arrange a date for your induction ceremony.
