Your turn! Learning strategies Now it’s your turn. Work in small groups and prepare and give a “show and tell” presentation on a topic of your choice. Use the following checklist (A–G) to help you prepare your presentation. 9 A Brainstorm ideas for your presentation in your group. One of the group should take notes and prepare an outline for the teacher about the group’s ideas. B Select the best ideas and allocate tasks to each group member. Consult your teacher whenever you need to, and keep a notebook with the details of your project. C Consider how you can collect information . You may find interesting information from these sources: The Internet – Search for the home pages of inter- est groups. Correspond with other schools outside Austria. CD-ROMs – Search your collection for relevant information. Print out any useful pages. Then edit and summarise as required. Use your own words and do not just copy difficult language. Remember that you will quickly lose the interest of your audi- ence if they do not understand the language. School library – There will be a lot of information in encyclopedias, books, and specialist magazines. Letters – For example, to embassies, companies, institutions, public or government information and education services. Many of these have free infor- mation handouts which they will send to you. Interviews – With English-speaking people in Austria: people working for foreign companies or embassies, tourists, assistants and students. Remember to approach them very politely as you are asking them to give up their time. Surveys – Surveys are a great way to help relate your presentation more to your audience and design some visually attractive graphs and bar charts. Think of between 6 and 10 questions about your topic and write them up into a questionnaire to ask your classmates and other students in the school.
