Becoming familiar with … TIP Matching sentences halves In this type of task you have to match sentence beginnings to sentence endings so that they form sentences that paraphrase or summarise statements from the listening text. Proceed as follows: • Use the 45-second preparation time to carefully read the individual parts, focussing on CONTENT. Don’t assume that grammatical structure and form will always give you a clue about what to match. In the task above, all sentence endings start with a passive construction ( was + past participle), and all sentence beginnings can be continued with such a construction. So it is rather the MEANING of the sentence halves that will help you rule out in advance options that cannot go together at all. • In both sentence halves, underline keywords to listen for. You may, for instance, underline reputation in Q1 and graded in A . Don’t expect, however, to always hear exactly these words. Rather, expect (and brainstorm beforehand about) words that could relate to, paraphrase or substitute them (e.g. he was (called) …, people said that …; ... was given/assigned a grade/mark, ... was assessed/evaluated, etc.) . Listening You are going to listen to a woman called Sophie talking about a presentation she gave when she was a student. First you will have 45 seconds to study the task below, then you will hear the recording twice. While listening, match the beginnings of the sentences (1–6) with the sentence endings (A–I). There are two sentence endings that you should not use. The first one (0) has been done for you. After the second listening, you will have 45 seconds to check your answers. 13 06 0 She remembers a presentation which … G Q1 The reputation of the professor … Q2 Her speech on Victorian domestic architecture … Q3 A lengthy diversion … Q4 When she finally arrived, she … Q5 The attention of her audience … Q6 However, this unfortunate presentation … A … was graded for the presentation.
