Make Your Way 6, Schulbuch mit Audio-CD und CD-ROM

What is all the fuss about? Talk about the topic 6 Listen to a radio debate on globalisation. 7 Look at the pictures and discuss the questions with a partner. You will hear Ted Barns, a journalist, and Claire Darwin, a sociologist, argue about the effects of globalisation on the world. As you listen, take notes for either Ted or Claire about the points below. Before listening, look at the info box. The term “Third World” is regarded as oldfashioned or even derogatory because it implies a hierarchy. These days, terms like “Majority World” or “(Global) South” have replaced terms like “Third World” or  “Developing Countries”. “Industrialized World” is used instead of the term “First World”. Note: However, Ted Barns is not the type of person who is sensitive about politically correct language. 1 Have you ever been at a demonstration? If so, tell your partner what happened. 2 What sort of things do people demonstrate about? Make a list. 3 What kind of people would you expect to find at these demonstrations? 5 Why do protest organisers and the police always disagree on how many people were there? 6 Should demonstrators be allowed to march whereever they want to, or should there be some control over where they go? 7 What other ways can people use to make their feeling known publicly? 4 Why might things turn ugly? Ted 1 Why globalisation has such a bad name. 2 How globalisation works for the good of the world. 3 Why nearly half the world earns less than $2 a day. 4 How multinationals can help developing countries. 5 How the “First World” will deal with unemployment. Claire 1 Why globalisation suffers from bad publicity. 2 Whether globalisation helps the poor get richer. 3 Why some Majority World countries don’t want to trade globally. 4 How multinationals use foreign labour. 5 The effect of outsourcing production on employment in the Industrialized World. 2/07 145 2 Compact unit 2: Globalisation and its effects Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
