Make Your Way 6, Schulbuch mit Audio-CD und CD-ROM
Listening You are going to listen to six people from different countries giving their opinion about globalisation. First you will have 45 seconds to study the task below, then you will hear the recording twice. While listening, match the beginnings of the sentences (1–6) with the sentence endings (A–I). There are two sentence endings that you should not use. The first one (0) has been done for you. After the second listening, you will have 45 seconds to check your answers. 17 07 0 The world only feels like a small place … B Q1 Terrorism has become an issue … Q2 Money is not an issue … Q3 Oil companies are interested in a remote area … Q4 True globalisation can only take place … Q5 The term “global village” is only a good description of the world … Q6 Today’s world feels like a smaller place … Becoming familiar with ... A … if you can make money with it. B … if you are wealthy. C … if you want to travel. D … if your culture is equal to all the others. E … if you own a company. F … if you are a multinational company. G … if you are known all over the world. H … if you really start helping Africa. I … if you have access to the Internet. TIP Matching sentences halves In this type of task you have to match sentence beginnings to sentence endings so that they form sentences that paraphrase or summarise statements from the listening text. Proceed as follows: • Use the 45second preparation time to carefully read the individual parts, focussing on CONTENT. Don’t assume that grammatical structure and form will always give you a clue about what to match. In the task above, all sentence endings start with if , and all sentence beginnings can be continued with it. So it is rather the MEANING of the sentence halves that will help you rule out in advance options that cannot go together at all. • In both sentence halves, underline keywords to listen for. You may, for instance, underline terrorism and become an issue in Q1 and make money in A . Don’t expect, however, to always hear exactly these words. Rather, expect (and brainstorm beforehand about) words that could relate to, paraphrase or substitute them (e.g. terrorist activities/attacks, terrorists …; become relevant, has to be considered/ taken into consideration …; earn money, make profit, is profitable … ). 153 2 Compact unit 2: Globalisation and its effects Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
