b) Now read the following article and answer the questions which follow it. Getting drunk … without drinking 1 An alarming report last month revealed that most people who develop serious liver disease from drinking are not alcoholics, but social drinkers – the kind of people who just like to party hard and have fun, not those who keep a vodka bottle under their bed. 2 So wouldn’t it be great if scientists could come up with a drug that could mimic the pleasur- able effects of alcohol, but which would have none of the downsides? According to Professor Jones of Herts University, there is no reason why such a drug could not be made today. 3 He explained that pharmacologists would need to put together a mixture of substances which could increase sociability and relaxation, but not lead to aggressive behaviour, nausea, or the inability to walk in a straight line. In this way, many of the social problems associated with drinking could be avoided, but people could still go out and have a good time as they do now. 4 There would be obstacles, of course. It would be complex and expensive to develop the product, and there would probably be political opposition to the idea. Also, drinkers may not be ready yet to give up their fine wine or favourite beer. But it’s certainly an idea to raise your glass to next time you have a drink! 1 Look at the title – does it make you want to read more? 2 What is the writer trying to do in the first paragraph? 3 Underline the first two or three words of every sentence.
