Grammar station: Position of adverbs 10 Language booster 11 • Adverbs of frequency usually go between the subject and the predicate. • If the predicate consists of two parts, it usually goes between the parts . • With am , are , is , was , were it comes immediately after . There are different kinds of adverb or adverb phrase: • Adverbs of manner tell you how something is done, like hard in the sentence: You must work hard . • Adverbs of time tell you when something is done, like early in the sentence: You must get up early . • Adverbs of place tell you where something is done, like in the kitchen in the sentence: Peel the potatoes in the kitchen . When there are several adverbs together in a sentence, the correct order is: manner place time When there are two time adverbs , the more exact one is put first: I. Adverbs of frequency II. Adverb phrases of manner, place and time Examples: He always went to bed hungry. My father would never allow me to disturb him. She was often late for dinner. Examples: But I expect my girls to work hard in this house every day . You must light the oven in the kitchen every morning . There was no girl over twelve or thirteen living permanently at home . Example: Can you get up at six in the morning ? • Look at the adverbs of time in these sentences.
