In 1840-41 you could buy six loaves of bread (each weighing 4 lbs) for 25p. This was barely enough to feed a typical family of five, and moreover it did not leave anything for rent, tea or even a piece of bacon. A good meal was something hot to fill the stomach with. This usually meant tea and boiled potatoes. The Sunday treat was soup, vegetable stew with some small piece of meat and pudding. People lived and died on that diet. The weekly budget of a skilled worker in times of full employment looked like this in 1841: 5 loaves of bread 17.50 p 4 lbs of meat 10.50 p 4 litres of beer (porter) 6.00 p coal 4.00 p 40 lbs of potatoes 7.00 p 85g of tea, 1 lb of sugar 7.00 p 1 lb of butter 3.50 p soap and candles 2.75 p rent 12.50 p school fees 1.50 p extras 2.25 p 74.50 p Question: ?
