Which of the questions above does it answer? 17 Writing station A: Giving YOUR opinion Choose one of the issues in 16 and write a paragraph giving YOUR opinion. 18 • Research which parts of rural Austria have suffered because of industry, and how they have suffered. • People often say that the rich are getting richer while the poor are getting poorer. Is this true in your community? What does it mean to be well-off in Austria, and who are the people that are getting left behind? There is a popular proverb that says that “necessity is the mother of invention.” In other words, if something is making life difficult, then someone will usually invent something to make it easier. For example, people needed money but the banks were closed, so the ATM was born. Thought of it in these terms, all new inventions usually help make life less troublesome. The problem is that sometimes an easier life is not always a better life. The car certainly makes it more convenient for us to get from A to B, but at the same time the exhaust emissions pollute our air. A more comfortable life does not always mean a better life. In fact many of our inventions have actually helped make the modern world a worse place. • The opening line of your paragraph has two functions: a to introduce the topic b to attract the readers attention • There will be some key words that you will want to repeat. Think of other ways of saying these words.
