Make Your Way 6, Schulbuch mit Audio-CD und CD-ROM
Becoming familiar with … Listening You are going to listen to a radio debate about the greatest medical achievements since 1840. First you will have 45 seconds to study the task below, then you will hear the recording twice. While listening, match the beginnings of the sentences (1–6) with the sentence endings (A–I). There are two sentence endings that you should not use. The first one (0) has been done for you. After the second listening, you will have 45 seconds to check your answers. 29 02 TIP Matching sentences halves In this type of task you have to match sentence beginnings to sentence endings so that they form sentences that paraphrase or summarise statements from the listening text. Proceed as follows: • Use the 45-second preparation time to carefully read the individual parts, focussing on CONTENT. Don’t assume that grammatical structure and form will always give you a clue about what to match. In the task above, all sentence endings start with an - ing form, and all the sentence beginnings can be continued by such a form. So it is rather the MEANING of the sentence halves that will help you rule out in advance options that cannot go together at all. • In both sentence halves, underline keywords to listen for. You may, for instance, underline anaesthesia in Q1 , and leading in A . Don’t expect, however, to hear always exactly these words. Rather, expect (and brainstorm about beforehand) words that could relate to, paraphrase or substitute them (e.g., anaesthetics, anaesthetic technique(s), …; first, foremost, principal, … ). 0 A medical poll was done on ...
