Book reviews Read the review of “Pompeii” by Robert Harris. Then mark the statements below true, false or not given. 11 Sometimes a new thriller writer bursts upon the scene with considerable impact: Forsyth with “The Day of the Jackal”, Cruz Smith with “Gorky Park” and Robert Harris with the wonderful “Fatherland”. Of these authors, Harris has easily been the most consistent. His new novel, “Pompeii”, a brilliant historical thriller that keeps the reader guessing to the end, is nothing less than we would expect. As he did in “Enigma”, Harris takes a familiar historical event (the volcanic destruction of an Italian city in AD 79) and creates a compellingly complex plot around the historical facts. How- ever, few novelists who use ancient history for their setting manage to create the sense of period quite as impressively as Harris. As the famous catastrophe approaches, we are immersed in the sights, sounds and smells of ancient Italy. His eye for detail is quite remarkable. Harris’s protagonist is the engineer Marcus Attilius, responsible for the massive aqueduct that provides water to everyone living in and around the Bay of Naples. Despite being proud of his job, Marcus is worried and suspicious: his predecessor in the job has mysteriously vanished. As Marcus faces several problems which put his life in danger, an event approaches that will make everything seem unimportant. Other writers have written stories in the shadow of this famous volcanic disaster, but Harris makes sure that his characters’ individual dramas are more important than the event. Marcus is a superbly created character: complex, conflicted, a synthesis of modern and ancient ways of thinking. Some readers may wish that Harris might return to something closer to our time in his next novel, but few who take this trip into a dangerous past will be able to resist Harris’s spellbinding historical saga.
