When you do that, what you do is to scan the text, i.e. you just run your eyes quickly over the text to locate the necessary information. As soon as you have found what you were looking for, carefully read the sentence around it in order to make sure you have really found the required piece of information. Sometimes you are looking for the main idea of what the text or passage is all about (the gist ). Then you skim through the text, just taking in the main points, but not reading the text very closely .
