Learning strategies: Scanning and skimming When you have to find information in a text or texts, you don’t have to read every single word. 11 Quickly read through the texts on the next page. Find out which person: 12 1 found that the English which people spoke was not like the English taught in school 2 doesn’t want to return to his/her country of birth 3 says English people don’t like arrogant behaviour 4 found England very cold at first 5 says people in England don’t care what they look like 6 didn’t know how to use a knife and fork 7 can speak English only 8 misses the food from his/her country 9 appreciates the infrastructure provided in Britain 10 thinks the British are tolerant 11 finds some aspects of family life better in Britain Sometimes you may be looking for a specific word or piece of information , e.g. the time of a train, or the name of a hotel. When you do that, what you do is to scan the text, i.e. you just run your eyes quickly over the text to locate the necessary information. As soon as you have found what you were looking for, carefully read the sentence around it in order to make sure you have really found the required piece of information. Sometimes you are looking for the main idea of what the text or passage is all about (the gist ). Then you skim through the text, just taking in the main points, but not reading the text very closely . You will often leave out words, sentences, or sometimes even paragraphs in order to get a quick overview of the author’s main messages. 81 4 Extensive unit 4: Multicultural Britain Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
