Compare your list with other groups’ lists. 7 Learning strategies: Collecting data with mind maps Before writing an essay, you need to order your ideas and relate them to each other. Therefore you should begin with brainstorming, which aims to collect as many ideas (data) as possible. Ideas usually enter the mind in a non-linear order. The advantage of using a mind map to collect your ideas on paper is that you can make notes in the order the ideas come to you. 8 6 Elizabeth Taylor was born in England but became a star while still a child in Hollywood. She successfully made the transition to adult roles and proved it was possible to be both a film star and a serious actress. In the 60s she was the highest-paid star in Hollywood when she played in “Cleopatra”. She and Richard Burton were married twice and divorced. Her private life was always stormy, and she married a total of 8 times. She also won a lot of admiration for her charity work for AIDS patients. 7 Florence Nightingale is known for her nursing in the Crimean War, and indeed, she was the founder of the nursing profession we know today. However, she was also very active in other spheres. She helped reform the British army and advised the government on military and diplomatic matters. She also helped to found the Red Cross movement. 8 Shirin Ebadi is a lawyer, lecturer, writer and activist. In 2003 she was also the first Muslim woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. She first came to fame in her native Iran when she became the first female judge, although she was forced to resign after the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Since then she has been actively involved in promoting the rights of women and children in the country, even though at times it has brought her into conflict with the authorities and put her life in danger.
