Listen to the story again and jot down the politically correct phrases and passages. Then get together in pairs and reconstruct the story using your notes. 19 Think of another popular children’s story and write a quick, politically correct version. 20 Working with words: Politically correct vocabulary Political correctness was born in the 1990s with the purpose of making people more sensitive to potential areas of prejudice such as race, religion, physical disabilities and, of course, sex, or, as many people prefer, gender. One of the areas that was given a lot of attention was the vocabulary we use. A word such as “chairman”, for example, was considered sexist and changed to “chair(person)”. Although political correctness had its heart in the right place, it was often taken to extremes and as a result was ridiculed. Even today, we still read stories of when it has been taken too far. Here are some examples of proposed vocabulary changes that never really made it. Match the words with their “politically correct” substitutes. 17 You are going to listen to a modern version of Little Red Riding Hood. The characters and the language have been changed to fit in with modern day life. Circle the six words in 17 you think you will hear. Listen and check. 18 1/04 1 incorrect 2 ugly 3 old 4 blind 5 evil 6 little girl 7 women 8 woodcutter 9 animal hater 10 fat a niceness deprived b alternative answer c speciesist d log-fuel technician e person of substance f womyn g mature h young person i optically challenged j underattractive 14 Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
