The biggest difference between being a man and a woman is simple. No matter what kind of false, lying, double-dealing, cheating man you are, one thing is true: there will always be a woman somewhere wanting to believe in you. By Marianne Wiggins C Just my luck – I wake up with a terrible hangover. As if having a man’s body wasn’t bad enough, I have to go to the bathroom and be a lad. Quite looking forward to shaving. Sadly, it proves unnecessary. I turn out to be the sort of man who still needs to shave only twice a week; fingers crossed for a hairier chin by 30. Perhaps that’s why I drink so much: more beer, more macho. I stand in front of the wardrobe, feeling a sudden desire to scratch myself in awkward places. Eventually I decide to be casual but trendy, and slip into jeans, trainers and a parka. At the pub we discuss Manchester United’s chances. This suits me fine – I like football; I’m talking just as much rubbish about it as I do in my girl’s body but, as if by magic, the comments that usually have men rolling their eyes are being treated with respect. I walk home alone in the dark. I feel unexpectedly vulnerable. As a woman I believe that as long as I stick to well-lit streets and look as if I know where I’m going, I’ll be all right. As a man, I feel as if I could be challenged to a fight at any moment. I’m relieved when the day is over. I can’t take the punishment of male life. But I stay up for a while to watch Baywatch. Strange, I never saw the point of it before.
