Make Your Way 7, Schulbuch mit Audio-CD und CD-ROM
Leslie Cromer As the channel’s representative you open the discussion by greeting the audience at home, stating the topic and introducing the members of the panel. It is your job to keep the discussion going, but you do not want the argument to get too heated. Do not forget to finish the discussion in time for the following programme by giving everybody on the panel time for their final statement. Mark Tully As a passionate viewer you think it is perfectly all right if women appear in commercials – as long as they are young and attractive. You argue that sex, violence and drinking appear in almost any film or serial, and if someone finds something inappropriate in a commercial, she or he can turn to ‘Truth in Advertising’, a consumers’ aid organisation. Note If you want to make this simulation more authentic, you can digicam the panel discussion(s) of one or more group(s). Then you will need extra people to do the recording in your groups (producer, camera operator, etc.). When presenting the simulation on video to the class, you can afterwards analyse: how the discussion was led • how each panel member supported • his or her arguments whether an agreement was reached • how you felt watching yourselves speaking • English on TV Role cards Peter Mandel As an IBA representative you have to justify the decisions you have taken in passing the controversial jeans advertisement. You criticise today’s aggressive promotion activities by various firms, but you also argue that many criticised ads and programmes should not be shown while children might be watching TV. Tara Winterton You are not happy with all the fuss that is being made about the commercials in question. You think that life is life and television cannot be different from it. In your opinion, many young people you know are very sceptical about what other people say in public as against what they do in private. Sam McGovern As the chair of an advertising agency which has recently been accused of presenting provocative scenes in its TV commercials, you do everything you can to keep up your good reputation with the audience. Jamie Fox You want to take this appearance on television as an opportunity to attract people from the audience to join your pressure group ‘Media Watchdog’. You think that good TV programmes and good products don’t need to show men or women in demeaning poses. Germaine Jones As a feminist writer you argue strongly against using female bodies for commercials. Moreover, you think that even in daily situations at home and at work, women are still often looked at and treated as if they were objects. 158 Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
