Female heroes A The other day I did an online search for female role models. Despite trying several different search engines, all I came up with were fashion sites and sites for the US women’s soccer and softball teams. Although I wasn’t surprised – after all this is a society that glorifies Britney Spears but ignores PJ Harvey – nevertheless I was still shocked. In 2010 I thought I ought to be able to find at least one or two sites about women known for their intellectual or artistic achievements. B I realised that I felt cheated. I was trying to discover women to view as positive role models, but no-one writes about anyone other than people who are appreciated for their looks or athletic talent. That is nice for girls who want to play tennis or soccer, but leaves a huge void for many others. C Women role models should be able to do more than run fast or look good in a fashion shoot. They should be able to compete with men in fields beyond sports. There are plenty of high-achieving women out there, but they receive little publicity. Even though we have come so far, this is still a male-dominated society, and many men feel threatened by women who show them up. D To sum up, females should not have to spend ages searching for role models to admire. These women should be out in the open and praised without a second thought.
