Make Your Way 7, Schulbuch mit Audio-CD und CD-ROM
Please, • compare and contrast the two pictures showing two kinds of places to live • discuss points for and against living in a village vs. living in a city with regard to infrastructure, types of houses, social surroundings, cultural facilities and standard of living • state your personal preference and give reasons for it • comment on the idiom “Home is where the heart is” Speaking In your oral exam, you will be faced with two different kinds of activities: the so-called individual long turn and the paired activity . a) Individual long turn This part of the oral exam tests your ability to talk at length about a topic in a coherent way. You have to talk for 5 minutes in the form of a monologue, i.e. alone – without somebody helping you develop your ideas as you speak. You have 10 minutes to prepare your talk. Tips: • During the preparation time, make a list or a mind map of the main points you would like to raise. Make sure that you take into account all bullet points from the instruction sheet. • If you find it useful and you have time, write down phrases that could help you structure your talk and express the relationship between the elements you want to cover (see p. 26). • During the exam : Take deep breaths, sit upright. This will make you look confident. You will feel confident, too. • Also, watch your body language. Don’t fold your arms across your chest. Rather, place them loosely on the table, thus appearing open and interested. • Keep eye contact with the person opposite you (the “interlocutor”). Don’t be distracted by the examiner sitting in the background, taking notes and assessing your performance. • If you cannot remember a word/an idea or have lost the thread, don’t despair. Take a deep breath and fill the time with expressions that give you time to think, or paraphrase what you want to say. • Bear in mind that an exam represents a formal situation. Therefore, don’t make your language too colloquial, informal or – worst of all – impolite. Here is what a speaking prompt for the individual long turn may look like: Topic: Places to live 29 25 1 Extensive unit 1: Herstory Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verl gs öbv
