To start a discussion on the usefulness of the advice “agony aunts” give to young people, he has asked you to write an answering letter (150–200 words) to the following letter. He has told you to be as caring and respectful as possible in your reply. 22 to deserve blows: Schläge verdienen You deserve better: Du hast Besseres verdient! Example: I’m not hot-headed at all but sometimes I lose my temper , especially with my brother … Dear Judy, I am 16 years old and when my boyfriend gets drunk, he beats me up. My parents have repeatedly told me they don’t want me seeing him any more, and they’re right. I know it will be hard for me to break up with him, and I’m afraid that when I tell him, he’ll beat me up even more. I love him a lot, but when he’s drunk, he’s too much for me to handle. What should I do? Trisha, Orlando, Fl Dear Judy, I’m 17 years old and I live with my parents and younger brother. I’ve always had a really happy family life until recently. A few months ago my father lost his job and he hasn’t worked since. He seems to have lost interest in life and spends most of his time at the pub. He comes home drunk and aggressive and shouts at everybody. He hasn’t hit anyone yet but I’m really afraid he soon will. What can I do? Worried from Worcester Dear Trisha, Don’t start a pattern of accepting abuse. The very first time a boyfriend hits a girl, she should leave him. Accept it. Some girls think their love can change their guy or that somehow they have provoked him and deserve blows. No way. Physical violence is never an appropriate answer to anger. Everybody is happy once in a while. Your boyfriend needs help now. But, first of all, you must get out. Then, if you can encourage him to get assistance, do so. Call your local Alcoholics Anonymous or a crisis hotline and ask them for advice. But don’t weaken and take him back. Listen to some music you like. Even if it means you have to stay with a relative in another town for a while (for your safety) do it. You deserve better.
