Winnipeg: a teenager is jailed a er a dangerous car chase. Montreal: ve teenagers are tried for beating an 81-year-old woman to death. With newspaper headlines like these, many Canadians are understandably concerned about the state of the nation’s youth. However, a report by the Reader’s Digest shows teenagers in a more favourable light. The magazine inter- viewed over one thousand 16- to 18-year-olds on a number of different subjects. The results paint a more positive picture of a socially aware, optimistic generation who are not afraid to work hard to achieve their dreams. 1 ______ 93% of teenagers agree with the United Nations’ ranking of Canada as one of the best countries in the world in which to live. And given this enthusiasm for the country it is not surprising that 58% are not in favour of independence for Quebec, one of the most contentious issues in recent Canadian history. However, within Quebec, 61% were in favour of independence, showing that this is a problem that refuses to go away. When it comes to Canada’s future, teenagers are generally optimistic, with 88% saying that the country is holding steady or improving. 2 ______ Although 17% of respondents’ parents were either separated or divorced, the teenagers said that a secure family life is high on their list of needs. In fact, “raising healthy and happy children” and “having a good marriage” are at the top of the list. 86% expressed the desire to marry and 88% of them believed their mar- riages would last. Almost everyone said they wanted to have children. Furthermore, Canadian teens believe that marriage vows are something to be taken seriously and 82% said that adultery is always wrong. However, only 11% believed that a man and woman should wait until they are married before having sex, and 87% believed there’s no problem in a man and woman living together outside of marriage. Finally, current Canadian parents are doing a good job, and an almost unanimous 98% of teenagers said their parents had set a good example of right and wrong. 3 ______ Canadian teenagers are certainly no layabouts. 67% said they had had holiday jobs last summer and 48% said they had paying jobs during the school year. Over 50% said they save all or most of their wages. And teenagers are optimistic for their financial future, too. A little less than 50% expected to be better off financially than their parents when they are about the same age their parents are now. Another 45% expect to be “about the same.” 51 3 Extensive unit 3: Canada Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
