Class survey Choose one of the questions that Canadian teenagers were asked and change it (if necessary) so it is relevant for Austria. Make sure every student in the class has a different question and then use your question to conduct a survey on that issue. Report your findings to the group and take notes of the results. You will need them for the “Writing station”. 6 Writing station Use the results of the class survey to write a report (200–250 words) on Austrian teenagers. Use the text in 5 and the following notes to help you. (For more information on how to write a report, see “Mastering ...” in this unit.) Introduction: Make it short and to the point, but use it to create an interest in the text. Paragraphs: Group the survey questions into themes and write a paragraph for each theme. Give the paragraphs titles. Conclusion: Write just a short paragraph to give your opinion of what the results mean. 7 4 ______ Canadians are proud of their multi-ethnic make-up, and an amazing 78% would vote against “a law that would stop almost all immigration into Canada for the next five years.” Even more, 85%, said it was “absolutely essential” to treat “all people equally, regardless of race or ethnic background.” Canadians have always been ready to volunteer when needed and teenagers are continuing that tradition. 59% said they had done volunteer work in the past year. However, a mere 14% said they would serve in the army during wartime. Teenagers also showed a strong sense of responsibility for others. 83% considered it essential to “take action to help” if they heard someone screaming or saw them being attacked, and 70% felt it essential to report a crime they had witnessed. Perhaps these last figures can be explained by the fact that teenagers have a strong foundation in faith and morals. 71% believe in God and 18% go to a house of worship once or more a week. 5 ______ 80% said that cheating on income tax returns was never acceptable, although rather disturb- ingly, 74% said that cheating in exams is generally ok. On other legal matters, 57% were against legalising marijuana, 50% want to see the death penalty for convicted murderers and 63% were against anti-abortion laws. 6 ______ There was one area where students showed a certain amount of cynicism: politics. 68% agreed with the assertion “there really are very few political leaders that I look up to.” And only 34% felt it was essential to vote in elections. Results like these may surprise many of today’s adults who have little faith in the younger generation. Perhaps one of the main problems is that it is only when teenagers are involved in something wrong that their stories get reported in our media, which creates a negative image of youth as a whole. However, this is clearly not the case and, as the report concludes, “Canada’s future, thanks to a lot of confident and hopeful teenagers, is in very good hands.” 52 Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
