Make Your Way 7, Schulbuch mit Audio-CD und CD-ROM
The Canadian sense of cultural identity You are going to hear an interview with Tania Huntsman, a Canadian living in Britain. Before you listen read the two definitions below: 12 Now compare your notes with another student and expand your keywords into 6 paragraphs, one for each heading. 13 An interesting place where you can find out people’s opinions, and also give your own, is through newsgroups on the Internet. On the next page there are some extracts from correspondence (known as “posts”) in the group soc.culture.canada on these two issues: Canada has no culture – has no identity • When will Canada finally be an independent country and get rid of the royal family? • Read the “posts” on the next page and match them with the points they raise (A–G). There are two points that you should not use. 14 Sometimes the United States is referred to as a “melting pot”. Why do you think this is? • Why do you think that Canada is referred to as a “mosaic”? Now listen to the interview and take keyword notes on the following issues: • 1/09 A Canada is losing its own cultural identity fast. B Canadians are emigrating to other countries to retain their traditions. C Canadians know what it means to be Canadian. D Canada needs to disassociate itself from the British Royal family. E The differences between Canada and the USA are gradually disappearing. F We need to keep a distinction between ourselves and the USA. G Canada is open to new cultures and thinks these improve it as a country. 1 how Tania Huntsman feels about being mistaken for an American 2 what she thinks a typical American is like 3 how she thinks Canadians are different from Americans 4 the Canadian “identity” 5 the relationship between Canada and Britain 6 Canada as a mosaic Melting pot: You put everything in and heat it so that it melts. What comes out is a completely new thing made up of all the things that went into the pot. They have all lost their individual identity to make the new thing. Mosaic: You take different small pieces of stone. You put them together to make a picture. The individual pieces of stone are not changed, but they make a new picture. 56 Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
