Writing: A report The purpose of a report is to record information from research or a survey. The information is usually statistical data in the form of a chart or graph. 28 Before you start: • Note down the key vocabulary you will need. • Look at your data and arrange it under topicbased headings . • Give your report a simple title that clearly shows what it is about. Writing your report: • Write in a neutral , impersonal style to report your findings. Use the passive to avoid using the first person ‘I’form, e.g. “20 students were given a questionnaire” instead of “I gave 20 students a questionnaire”. • Keep your introduction short and to the point: explain why you are writing about the subject and where your information has come from. • Write a paragraph under each of your topicbased headings. • In your conclusion , you can give your opinion about the results or summarise what they mean. a) Look at the report question and read the sample answer on the next page.
