That’s exactly what a cleaner at a London gallery must have thought when s/he threw away a bag filled with discarded paper and cardboard. Unfortunately the “rubbish” was part of a work by Gustav Metzger, a London-based German artist most famous for inventing “auto-destructive” art in 1959. The bag was part of Metzger’s “Recreation of First Public Demonstration of Auto-Destructive Art”, a copy of a piece he first produced in 1960 to demonstrate the “finite existence” of art. The work also features an “acid painting” – nylon covered in acid which slowly destroys it to illustrate the transient nature of paintings, sculptures and other artworks. Happily the 78-year-old artist was able to replace the bag with a new one, but the gallery would not reveal whether he would be compensated. The gallery said the work is now covered over at night so it cannot be removed again, and staff have been made aware that the rubbish bag is part of the exhibit. It is not the first time such a mistake has been made. In 2001, a cleaner at a London’s Eyestorm Gallery cleared away an installation by artist Damien Hirst, having mistaken it for a pile of rubbish. The collection of beer bottles, coffee cups and overflowing ashtrays was said to represent the chaos of an artist’s studio. And in the 1980s, a work of Joseph Beuys which featured a very dirty bath, was scrubbed clean by a gallery worker in Germany. cleaner: Reinigungskraft to bin sth.: etw. wegwerfen Eyestorm Galleries: Kette von Kunstgalerien in Großbritannien true false justification 1 The bag of rubbish was part of a work of art. 2 Gustav Metzger lives in Germany. 3 Metzger created the piece especially for the exhibition. 4 The “acid painting” symbolises that art doesn’t live forever. 5 The gallery has paid Metzger for the mistake. 6 In 2001, someone tidied up Damien Hirst’s gallery and accidentally destroyed some art. 7 Joseph Beuys’ dirty bathroom was scrubbed clean by a gallery worker. 73 4 Extensive unit 4: Art attack!
